How to tell a spring has broken
The springs carry the weight of the door. The opener and your arm only guide it. When a spring breaks, that weight lands on whatever tries to lift the door next.
A bang from the garage
A torsion spring that breaks under tension makes a sharp crack. The door stops working after it.
A gap in the coil
Look at the bar above the door. A broken torsion spring shows a gap of a few inches where the coil has parted.
The door rises a few inches and stops
The opener feels the extra load and quits, or it strains and the door barely moves.
The door will not stay put halfway
A door that drops when you let go of it partway up, or slams the last few feet, has lost spring force.
A spring hanging slack at the side
On a door with extension springs, a broken spring hangs loose beside the track or dangles from its cable.
The two kinds of spring we replace
Torsion springs sit on a steel bar above the door. They twist as the door comes down and unwind as it goes up, turning drums that wind the lift cables. The springs are wound a set number of turns to suit the height of the door.
Extension springs run beside the horizontal track on each side and stretch as the door closes. Each one pulls on a cable that runs over a pulley and down to the bottom corner of the door, and they work as a pair, one on each side.
The replacement
What goes into a new spring
Sized to the door
The wire size, the length and the coil width of the new spring all follow from the weight and height of your door.
One spring or both
On a door with two torsion springs, both can be replaced on the same job. On an extension spring door, the pair can be replaced together so both sides pull evenly.
Cables and drums
When a spring lets go, the cable can come off its drum or fray. A damaged cable is replaced on the same job, and the door is set level on its drums.
Balance
The new spring is tensioned so the door stays put when stopped halfway and rises evenly from the floor to the top. A balanced door also puts less load on the opener.
Until the new spring is in
Leave the opener switched off, or unplug it if you can reach the plug. If the door is shut, leave it shut, and if it is stuck open, leave it open. Pulling the release cord on an open door with a broken spring lets the door come down on its own, because the opener is the only thing holding it up.

The door lifts easily by hand
The springs are doing their job, so the fault is in the opener or its controls.
Crooked with both springs whole
A door that hangs low on one side with both springs intact points to a frayed, snapped or slipped cable on that side.
The door is out of its track
A door jammed out of its track will not move even with good springs. It is set back in the track, and bent track is replaced.
The door itself is badly damaged
When the sections are failing as well, a new door comes with its own springs sized to it.
What to tell us about the broken spring
Say whether the springs sit on a bar above the door or run along the tracks at the sides, how many there are, and whether the door is a single or double width. Mention whether a cable has come loose as well, whether the door is wood, steel or aluminum, whether it has an opener, and whether it is shut, open or stuck partway.
