Which repair fits what your door is doing
A loud bang, then a door too heavy to lift
A spring has broken. It is replaced with a new spring sized to the weight and height of the door.
The motor hums or clicks and nothing moves
The fault is in the opener or its controls. Opener repair and new openers are covered on their own page.
Sections split, rusted through or badly bent
When the door itself is failing, a new door measured to the opening can be the better answer than another repair.

Hardware
Cables, rollers, hinges and track
Lift cables
A steel cable runs from a bracket at the bottom corner of the door up to a drum or pulley on each side. A frayed or snapped cable, or one that has jumped off its drum, is replaced and the door is set level.
Rollers
Worn or cracked rollers grind, rattle or bind in the track. New rollers let the door travel evenly again.
Hinges
Hinges join each section to the next and flex as the door turns the curve at the top. A cracked or bent hinge is replaced so the sections fold together cleanly.
Track
A door that has come out of its track is set back in. Bent track pieces are straightened or replaced, and loose brackets are refastened so the track holds its line.
When the door turns back or refuses to close
An automatic opener has two safety sensors mounted low on each side of the opening. One sends a beam across the doorway and the other watches for it. If the beam is blocked, or the two sensors no longer face each other, the opener will not close the door, or it sends the door back up partway down.
A sensor knocked out of line is realigned. A sensor that has failed, or a sensor wire that has been cut or pulled loose, is replaced. A door that goes all the way down and then bounces back up off the floor has a different cause, in the opener settings, which the opener page covers. A sensor lens coated in dust or cobwebs can block the beam just as an object in the doorway would.

Door sections and weather seals
Damage to the door does not always mean a new door. One damaged section or a worn seal is a repair.
A dented or cracked section
A section with a dent or a crack can be repaired, or swapped for a new section when a matching one is still made for that door.
Bottom seal
The rubber strip along the bottom of the door closes the gap at the floor. A torn, flattened or missing bottom seal is replaced to keep out rain, leaves and pests.
Side and top seals
Seals along the jambs and the header close the gaps around a shut door. Seals that have cracked, shrunk or pulled away are replaced.
Seals between sections
Some doors have a seal where each section meets the next. A torn one lets light and rain through a shut door, and it is replaced.
What to say when you call about a door
Tell us what the door does when you press the button or try to lift it, and whether you heard a bang before it stopped. Say whether it is open, shut or stuck partway, whether the garage is attached or detached, whether the door has an opener or is lifted by hand, and whether it is wood, steel or aluminum if you know. If a cable is hanging loose, the door sits low on one side or it has come out of its track, say which side.
