Size and weight

A loud bang and a door too heavy to lift
The springs carry the weight of a garage door, and the opener only guides it. When a spring breaks, it goes with a bang, and the door turns into dead weight. On a house or a business door, the broken spring is replaced.
Torsion springs
A torsion spring sits on a steel shaft above the door. After it breaks, you can see a gap of a few inches between two parts of the coil.
Extension springs
Extension springs stretch along the tracks on each side of the door. A broken one hangs loose, and the door lifts unevenly or not at all.
The opener after a spring breaks
The opener may lift the door a few inches and stop, or hum without moving it. It is meeting the full weight of the door, so leave it off until the spring is replaced.
Roll-up door springs
On a roll-up door the springs are inside the barrel above the opening. A curtain that will not stay up, or drops hard when let go, points to the springs in the barrel.
