Match the fault
What the opener is doing, and where the fault lies
Motor hums, door does not move
The motor has power but is not turning the drive. A stripped drive gear or a failed start capacitor can cause it. If the door is heavy to lift by hand, a broken spring is to blame, not the opener.
No light and no sound
The opener is not getting power. A tripped breaker, a tripped outlet, an unplugged cord or a failed power supply inside the unit can each be behind it.
Motor runs, door stays put
The motor turns but the door is not connected to it. The trolley may be released, or the chain or belt may be broken or off its sprocket.
A click and nothing else
A click with no motor sound points to the relay or circuit board inside the opener, or to a motor that will not start.
Door stops short, or bounces back off the floor
The travel limits or the force setting are off. They are reset so the door closes fully and stops at the right place at the top.
The door starts down, then goes back up
When the door turns back partway down with nothing in the way, the safety sensors are blocked or out of line. Sensor repair is on the garage door repair page.
The door is locked
A door with its inside slide bolt shot across will not move, and the opener strains or reverses against it. With the bolt slid back, the opener can run the door again.
Opener quits after a few trips in a row
Openers shut the motor off when it overheats. A door that is hard to move makes the motor run hot, so a binding door is part of the fix.
Controls
When a remote or the wall button stops working
If the opener runs from one control but not another, the fault is in that control or its link to the opener, not in the motor.
One remote does nothing
A remote that still fails with a fresh battery is reprogrammed to the opener or replaced.
Every remote fails, the wall button works
The receiver or antenna in the opener is at fault, or a lock setting on the wall control has been switched on.
Remotes work only up close
A remote that only works near the door points to a weak battery, a damaged antenna on the opener, or something new in the garage blocking the signal.
The wall button fails, the remotes work
The wire between the button and the opener is damaged or loose at one end, or the wall control itself has failed. The wiring is repaired or the control replaced.
New openers
When a new opener makes more sense
It keeps failing in different places
A gear one year and a circuit board the next on the same unit points to an opener that is wearing out as a whole.
Parts are no longer made
An older opener whose gear, board or remotes are no longer made cannot be put right with new parts, so a new opener is quoted in its place.
The motor has burned out
On an older unit, a failed motor is the point where a new opener makes more sense than a repair.
A heavier door
A new or heavier door can need a stronger opener than the one that ran the old door.
A door that has never had an opener
A door that has always been lifted by hand can take its first opener when there is power near the door and room above or beside it for the unit.
What to tell us about the opener
Say whether the problem is the same from the remote and the wall button, and whether the opener light comes on. If the case has a name on it, give that too, along with whether it is a chain, belt or wall-mounted unit and roughly how old it is. Mention whether the door lifts easily by hand.
