When you ask for a quote, point out any of these:

Downspout work
Adding, moving, extending or reconnecting
Adding one
A second downspout on a long run lets the gutter drain faster, which can stop overflow at the far end of a run that has only one outlet.
Moving one
A new downspout goes in at the better corner, and the old opening is closed off and sealed.
Reconnecting one
A downspout that has come apart at a joint or pulled off the outlet is put back together and sealed, with new brackets where the old ones have pulled out.
Replacing one
A crushed, split or dented downspout is replaced with a new one in a matching color.

Ground that falls away
Lawn or a bed that slopes away from the building carries the water off instead of back toward the wall.
Clear of the way in
Away from doors, steps and paths, so nobody has to walk through the flow in a rain.
Clear of the next lot
Not aimed at a property line, where the water would run onto a neighbor's yard.
Onto ground that holds up
Bare soil washes out under a strong flow, so the water is led onto lawn or a splash block instead.

Extensions, splash blocks and brackets
Extensions
Carry the water a few more feet from the wall, far enough that it does not sit against the foundation.
The bottom elbow
Turns the water away from the wall and onto the extension or the block.
Brackets
Hold the pipe flat to the wall along its length, so it does not work loose or rattle in the wind.
Downspout or gutter?
When the trouble starts higher up
Some water problems at a downspout begin in the gutter above it. These can go on the same quote as the downspout work:
Little water comes out in a rain
Leaves packed over the opening at the top hold the water in the gutter, and a cleaning clears them.
The gutter fills while the pipe stays dry
Something is lodged partway down, and the pipe has to be opened up before the gutter can drain.
Drips where the pipe meets the gutter
The outlet seal has failed and is resealed as a repair.

How many downspouts
One loose pipe is a small job. New outlets along several runs take longer.
How far one moves
Moving a downspout along the same wall is simpler than taking it to another side of the building.
Length of pipe
A tall wall or a long route across one takes more pipe and more brackets.
New gutters
Downspouts on a new or replacement system
When new gutters go up, the downspouts are planned with them: how many each run needs, where each one sits and where each pipe empties. Downspout work on its own is for gutters that stay up, where only the pipe, its position or the fittings at its foot change. On a replacement, the old downspouts come down with the old gutters.
