Leaks
Where a Springfield gutter lets water through

An inside or outside corner is a mitered joint sealed on the inside. When that seal lets go, the drip falls from the corner of the house.

Fixing the leak at its source
A leaking joint is resealed with sealant made for gutter metal. A corner that has pulled apart, or keeps failing after it is sealed, gets a new corner piece. A rusted-through section is replaced. The repair stays at the joint that leaks, and the rest of the run is left alone.
Some drips are not gutter joints at all. Water running down the wall behind a gutter whose joints are dry is getting past its back edge, and the fix is to reset the gutter higher. Water spraying from the side of a downspout comes from a split or an open elbow in the downspout itself, which is refitted or replaced.
Overflow

Water pouring over the front edge is a different problem from a leak. The gutter is taking in more than it can pass to the downspouts.
More than one cause can be at work on the same run. A gutter that overflows even right after a cleaning has a layout problem, not a debris problem.
A blocked outlet
Leaves packed at the outlet or in a downspout elbow stop the flow. A hand cleaning and a flush clear it.
Too few downspouts
A long run with one outlet cannot empty fast enough. Adding a second downspout halves the distance the water has to travel.
Slope set wrong
A run that is level, or falls away from its outlet, holds water until it spills. The run is rehung with a steady fall.
Undersized gutter
A small gutter under a big roof fills fast. Our standard 6-inch gutter carries more water than the smaller sizes.
A roof valley
Where two roof slopes meet, water from both lands in one short stretch of gutter. An outlet near that spot takes the load off.
Guards and overflow
Guards keep leaves from packing the outlet, which is one cause of overflow. They do not add capacity. A run that is short on downspouts, or set with the wrong fall, spills over the same way with guards on it, so those fixes come first. Where leaves are the whole problem, guards fitted over the cleaned and repaired gutters cut down how often the outlets clog.

Repair or replace for a leaking gutter
The deciding questions are the metal and how many seams are going. One or two leaking joints on a sound gutter are sealed. When several seams are failing at once, the run is near the end of its life, and replacement is the better spend. When the bottom of the trough has thinned or rusted through in more than one place, sealant has nothing solid to hold on to, and that length or the whole run is replaced instead.
