Why the height of a gutter matters
Roof water does not drop straight down off the edge. In a light rain it clings to the underside of the roofing and runs back toward the wall; in a hard rain it shoots out past the edge. The right height puts the back of the gutter just under the roof edge, where both kinds of flow land in the trough.
