What a roof without gutters leaves behind

Without gutters, water leaves the roof along the whole eave at once. You see it on the ground and the walls: a line worn into the soil under the roof edge, mud splashed up the bottom of the siding, water sheeting off above the front door, and puddles that sit by the steps after a rain. Gutters gather that water and send it down at a few chosen points instead.

Planning a first set of gutters

Gutters go along the eaves, where the roof slope ends and the water runs off. The sloped edges at the ends of a gable roof shed very little and are left bare. You can cover every eave at once, or start with the edges over doors and walkways.

Each run is formed on site from a coil of metal to the length of its edge, or hung in half-round aluminum or copper, in a color matched to the trim. Outlet spots are chosen before the gutter is hung.

Cleaning several buildings on one property

Where the house, a garage and a workshop all have gutters, they can be cleaned on the same trip. Say how many buildings have gutters and whether any are two stories. If one of them has a downspout that never runs, or a corner that drips, add that to the request so the repair is quoted with the cleaning.

If the gutters fill up soon after each cleaning, guards are the other option. They go over the existing gutters after those gutters are cleaned and any repairs are made, and they keep leaves and needles out of the trough. Fine grit still gets through, so gutters with guards still need an occasional cleaning, just less of it.
